Birthday Wishes
This year Lucas had but one wish for his birthday – spray painting. We decided to prime some plywood, get paint and let him go to town. These were his very first attempts and everyone got in on the action.
Field Notes: Georgia O’Keefe at the MFA
On of our favorite things to do is to take the studio on the road and this time inspiration came in the form of a Boston Museum of Fine Arts outing with Abuela. The task at hand was to observe Georgia O’Keefe’s Red Tree, Yellow Sky painting and to respond. The beauty of Art is that it inspires everyone in different ways. Lucas was inspired to make and he created among other things a Crocodile City, Alex was inspired to represent his connection to Nature and Maximo was inspired to recall his very own yellow sky on The Beach.
Stitch-tuation
It’s that time of the year again when creative minds cannot be satisfied with off-the-shelf halloween solutions and custom creations are in order. What are our passions this year? None other than Pokemon and Rocky Balboa. Here is what we came up with.
Field Notes: Sea Turtle Hatchlings
North Carolina is a special place for us because we get to be in nature, surrounded by wildlife, and the inspiration is limitless. This is where we fell in love with birds, where sharks became our passion, where sand revealed patterns that would remain a point of reference in our minds throughout the rest of the year and now where we had the honor of welcoming loggerhead sea turtle hatchlings to the world. It was absolutely magical, completely unexpected and one of those memories that will last a lifetime. Let us tell you about it all.
Metal Crane
As you know by now we are bird fanatics and the Crane is one of those amazing creatures that we love to draw and represent in our art. We also love tools and to make things to surround ourselves with and thus was worn our Metal Crane, Siberian Crane to be exact. This is how we made this sculpture.
Field Notes: Ruby-Throated Hummingbird
We take any possible opportunity to expand our knowledge about the things we love and because of that our wonderful Ohio family created a fantastic opportunity to do just that. This June we had the unique pleasure of being invited to watch the amazing Amy Wilms band Ruby-throated Hummingbirds. Amy has a federal sub-permit to band birds along with state permits to band in Indiana and Ohio, it takes a lot of effort to receive these permits but she makes it look easy. Amy and her husband Carl hosted us at the Mary Gray Bird Sanctuary where they have been Resident Managers for over 10 years. The Sanctuary is owned and operated by the Indiana Audubon Society, and is located just south of Connersville in Fayette County, and occupies more than 700 acres. Mini Frames
We love documenting the small drawing gestures created throughout the weeks and it gave us an idea… what if we created mini frames to display our work? What if they were simple to make, easy to display and made of everyday materials? We started brainstorming and came up with a couple of ideas but this is how the bottle caps and resin became our latest obsession.Read More

Tiles for Miles
One of the things we like to do is to experiment with new materials. Painting on tiles can be a bit crude because we used the bottle as our application tool, but it allowed us to synthesize our ideas and to execute singular concepts for each piece. Everyone created tiles as gifts for our loved ones.Read More
Land Sharks
We were lucky enough to take a trip to Cape Cod during the summer and much of the trip focused on water activities and looking for sharks. This studio is always on the lookout for real-life opportunities to connect with our inspirations. We all like animals but Lucas LOVES sharks. We visited the Chatham Fish Pier where the inspiration to memorialize the dogfish shark emerged (the concept of killing the little dogfish made quite an impression), we also saw seals which according to Alex are an example of endangered species making a comeback (very exciting news) and we also visited Lighthouse beach which is closed to swimmers due to the presence of sharks.
A “Little Prince” Journal by Alex
This summer we had the opportunity to read Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s classic The Little Prince thanks to a gift from Tío. The Little Prince has been a multi-generational inspirational favorite in our family so our immediate idea as we were reading it–some of us again and others for the first time– was to create written and visual responses inspired by every chapter of the book. You can follow along with your own copy of Saint-Exupéry’s book. This Journal was executed by Alex, he read every chapter and then summarized the “big idea” in his own words and drawings. Wood Experiments
Sometimes the subject matter brings us together and sometimes it’s the tools and materials. The moment that our artists heard the humming of the Dremel tool they signed up for the challenge. First they drew their ideas onto wood followed by sanding/etching and completed with a layer of watercolor paint.Read More
Wearable Art
One of the things we have always enjoyed is coming up ways of surrounding ourselves with art. The youngest members of our studio love to make wearable art for themselves and for their family. T-shirts are always on the list and while the process can be time-consuming and messy they get better and better in terms of thinking through what they want to say before they start.
